View this post on Instagram Sometimes, if you're paying attention, you'll learn something new! Today I noticed a piece of detritus on a tree that was... moving. Crawling, even. Some close observation and a google search later and I learned about aphid lions, which are actually the larvae of green lacewings. They hunt aphids and other invertebrates, and then pile their kills (and other debris) on their back as a form of camouflage. You can see this one has actually collected some lichen for its display. #aphidlion #greenlacewing #invertebrates #insects A post shared by Erin Burt (@erintheunready) on Oct 16, 2020 at 11:15pm PDT
