I also wanted to add a note for those who have English as not-their-first-language or who are just not that familiar with the terminology, "Dame" here is used like the English sense as a sort of equivalent to "sir"--though in this case used more just as a title of authority than as a "U R A KNIGHT" title. 

And if you can't figure out who Dame Crane is, here are some hints.  I don't know how ambiguous it is here but it should be obvious within the next few pages.  It's not really that important unless you want to rampantly speculuate, which you probably do.
